Looking back on my freshman year, I can honestly say the most memorable events occurred without warning and in common places. There is no doubt as a freshman you'll have fun in frat parties, dorm events, local concerts, sporting events, and so on, but those types of events (which you should definitely be a part of) eventually blur into one collective memory of "fun times." The events I speak to, are those random days/nights that inevitably occur hours before your 15 page paper or engineering problem set is due and include you, your friends, a dorm room/a local eatery/etc. where an engaging conversation just happens. These conversations will remind you why you made the decision to go to school. Yes, a degree offers better jobs, prospects, etc, but education is more about grades and classes. It's about learning how to talk freely and openly with friends and strangers from across the nation and the world on topics that range from Neoclassical theory in Economics, and the Self in Modern Philosophy to culture specific habits and the wonders of the television. 

So, next time someone pops in your door (which should always be open in your freshman dorm, just for these types of situations) and wants to talk while you're finishing up an assignment, let him/her/they come into your room and stop working. Five years from now, you won't remember what your thesis was in that paper or what the answer was for question # 5 on the problem set, but I guarantee you'll remember what topic/s made you laugh, think, and wonder that day/night/early morning you decided to enjoy your freshman year.
